Sven B. Schreiber (sbs) I bought this album because of Arnold Schönberg's symphonic poem "Pelleas und Melisande" contained on it - one of his earlier works, composed in 1902/1903, not long after the more popular "Verklärte Nacht". Obviously, Schönberg was quite a bit ahead of his time then, because this epic work wasn't received very well by the audience on its first performance in 1905 - the usual fate of a true pioneer. Nevertheless, it's one of his most fascinating works, highly complex and polyphonic, stretching tonality to the boundaries of the laws of harmony that were in effect at the beginning of the 20th century.

Regarding the "Five Stanzas" written by Dane Rudhyar in 1926, I have to admit that I didn't know this composer before, but I like this work pretty much after this first encounter. It's a symphonic poem, too, and the music is quite dense with a great sense of "dissonant harmony" - a term Rudhyar uses himself in his writings about music theory. Favorite track: Schoenberg: Pelleas und Melisande - 62 to end.

about

Sinfóníuhljómsveit Æskunnar (the Youth Orchestra of Iceland) was founded in 1985, by Paul Zukofsky, and was a continuation of the "Zukofsky Seminars in Orchestral Music" which began in 1977, and were sponsored by the Reykjavik College of Music. The aim of both groups was to provide an opportunity for Icelandic music students to perform large scale (preferably 20th Century) works that they otherwise would not do. The orchestra was comprised of the students, teacher-coaches, and guests as needed to supply the required complement and under Paul Zukofsky gave the Icelandic premieres of Berg (Wozzeck Excerpts), Bruckner (Symphony No. 2 and 6), Mahler (Symphonies VI, VII, and IX), Colin McPhee (Tabu-Tabuhan), Messiaen (Et Expecto Resurrectionem Mortuorum and the Turangalila Symphony), Satie (Relache), Schoenberg (Pelleas and Melisande and his arrangement of the Brahms Piano Quartet) and Stravinsky (Orpheus).
